Basketball Hotspots

Holly May submitted this game that she got from Two PE Guys -

Basketball Hot Spots
Here is an activity that I do with my 1st and 2nd graders called Hot Spots. I put hula hoops around the baskets and use smaller basketballs.

need: 1-3 baskets, 1 ball per team, 24 or more poly spots

  1. Teams line up at one end gym or along a sideline. 4-5 per team and one ball per team.
  2. A player may go to any "hot spots" abailable to take one shot. One foot must be on a "hot spot" when shooting.
  3. If the basket is missed, the player retrieves the basketball and dribbles back to the next player in line.
  4. If the basket is make, the player picks up the spot before retrieving the basketball, then dribbles back to the next player in line.
  5. Game continues until all "hot spots" are gone. You can have different point values for spots but I don't.
  6. If a player makes a basket but does not pick up the spot, any other player with a basketball may claim it. However, that player must make the basket before picking up the "hot spot".
  7. Players must dribble out to a spot and then dribble back to their line and and hand off to the next person.

Gorilla Tag

Equipment/Setup:
4 to 7 Hula Hoops, 6-10 Cones, task cards (push-ups, sit-ups...)
Pinnies, Scarves or Flags to identify Gorillas vs. Safari Guides

Instructional Set-up: Randomly spread out Hula Hoops in the activity area – these are the safe zones. Set up a rectangular “cage” on one side of the area with the cones. Place task cards on the cones that make up the cage area.

Activity Summary:
Divide the group into two teams – “Gorillas” and “Safari Guides”. I normally have about 2/3 the class be Gorillas and the other 1/3 be Safari Guides. Students scatter in the playing area and start the game with the guides chasing the Gorillas. The hoops are safe zones, but only one person can be in a hoop at one time, and only for 5 seconds – count “1- banana, 2- banana, etc…” If tagged, students must go to the “Cage” and perform one task before re-entering the game. After a while, the instructor will call out “Gorillas on the Loose!” At this time, all of the Gorillas in the cage are free and all of the Gorillas begin chasing the Safari Guides. If tagged, Safari Guides must go to the “Cage”. This is repeated for the duration of the game.

I found this game at www.stationpe.com which you can sign up for a free 30 day trial.

State and Capitals

This is a great cooperation activity to do with your older kids who might be studying the states and capitals. This activity incorporates cooperation, a little math, and some bowling skills.

I have written either a state or a capital on a tennis ball for a total of 100 tennis balls. I do not use all at one time, I follow the classrooms teachers breakdown of regions. I also only use as many tennis balls as there are students in class that day. For example, if I have a class of 26 students I only use 13 states with their capitals.

Every student gets 1 tennis ball and they must first find their partner. So if they have the tennis ball that says Salem, they must find the person with the ball that says Oregon. Once they have done this they both go to a sideline and once everyone has found their partner I have the students roll their ball towards a cone I have placed in the middle circle of our gym. Here is the math part. I count up the amount of tennis balls that have stopped in the circle and with the total of number of tennis balls we've used in class we now have a fraction. You can also do the percentage and use this as their goal to beat.

Welcome Back!

Greetings and welcome to the Skspe Blog page. Connections with other professionals in Physical Education cannot only be a great way of mainaining professional development but can help to spice up your lesson plans with dynamic new content.

Blogging is a whole lot easier than Clogging (left) and doesn't take a whole lot of effort so there is tremendous potential for all of us to collaborate and stockpile an infinite number of new activities to try with our students.

Think about it... if every Sks PE teacher submitted (1) idea a month for 9 months...
(approx. 40 x 9 = 360 lessons total) ... you could teach a new activity every day for 2 straight years without repeating a lesson)!

Here's Activity #1 for the 2007-08 school year... try
Fitness Frenzy as a welcome back fitness warmup for one of those first days of school.
